A recruiter's opinion on Game Developer resume metrics

Show it in numbers, every guide says. A Game Developer should have the easiest time of anyone with that: games count everything, frame rate, memory, crashes, active players. Yet most resumes stop at a list of engines and call it done.

Which ones make the resume, though? Which tool keeps each? And can a number tip a hiring call?

In the years I spent recruiting, a solid chunk of it at Google, every Game Developer who landed an offer had shown the game itself getting better. Not “worked on gameplay” but “shipped the combat system and held a locked 60 fps on console.” A line like that gets you past the screen. Anyone can name an engine; showing that players felt the thing you made is the hard part.

Telling the figures that carry weight from the ones that do not, then wording each so a recruiter clocks the weight, eats up a lot of my resume writing service. Why metrics matter on a Game Developer resume

The way recruiters actually read a page, I lay out in full in how recruiters screen resumes; the short of it is that it comes in waves. First the recruiter, glancing at your profile summary and the roles under it. Then a senior developer or the hiring manager, working through the detail to judge whether games actually ship on your watch.

Your numbers get read by both, then: the recruiter up front, and behind them a lead developer who can tell at once what a locked 60 fps or a 0.2% crash rate cost to reach.

To the recruiter the figure is a blur; they are just matching keywords. Whoever leads the team reads “held 60 fps with the whole scene on screen” and sees the exact effort it took. The signal: you ship games that actually run, not just a row of engine logos.

And they are not weighted evenly. Feeling short on numbers? Relax: for a Game Developer, a single defensible frame-rate or shipped-title figure already outweighs a whole tools list.

No figure? Go qualitative. How much you touched and where it went still read as real. Point to the first system you stood up, a mechanic you dragged from clunky to satisfying, or the frame budget the team still holds to today. A hiring manager reads those as genuine game work, not one bit invented. Every card above ships with a sample you can copy.

Sure, provided the guess is honest and holds up to scrutiny. You sped up loads but the original figure never got recorded? "Load times dropped from about a minute to a few seconds" does the job. Reach for relative numbers any time the exact ones sit under NDA. Single rule: the logic holds up when you say it aloud to a panel.

Never do it. Game interviews get technical quickly, and a fake number folds the moment they probe how you captured the frame time or where the crash rate came from. One fabricated number can lose you the offer outright. A plain account of what you shipped stays true and lands just as hard.

Not every one, only your strongest. Keep the figures for the sharpest bullets up in the newest role, seen earliest. Tag them all with numbers and the standouts drown as filler takes over. A tight handful you can defend outperforms a page of them.

Go with whatever hits hardest. Counts work as plain totals ("2 million downloads"); improvements read better in percent ("crash rate down 90%"). Bin any percentage with nothing beneath it. Where it lands, run both together: "day-7 retention from 18% to 31%."

They do, and there is more of it around than juniors assume. A prototype you finished, frame rate you clawed back, a tool you wrote, a bug cleanup you ran, any student project or game jam throws off plenty. Nobody needs a marquee studio on there, just evidence you got something out the door.

Usually right where you left it. The engine profiler has your frame rate and memory; analytics or the crash reporter has the crash rate; the tracker holds your bug counts; the store dashboard carries downloads and retention. Lost access? Put down a careful guess and mark it clearly as a guess.
