Dear Wayfair IT team,

I am applying for the IT Engineer position posted on LinkedIn. I work in IT infrastructure and support, and I would like to bring that experience to your team.

While researching Wayfair, I read about how your teams work across offices and remote locations, and the systems that keep them connected. Keeping that kind of environment secure and running smoothly is the work I enjoy most.

Your posting lists three needs I can meet right away: Windows and Linux server administration, network and VPN management and identity and endpoint management with Microsoft 365.

On Windows and Linux server administration, I work with Windows Server, Linux and VMware every day. In my role as IT Engineer at Rackspace, I was responsible for keeping 120 production servers patched with no unplanned downtime last year. I also moved our patching to an automated monthly schedule.

For network and VPN management, I use Cisco switching, firewall rules and site-to-site VPN. In my role as IT Engineer at Rackspace, I handled setting up site-to-site VPNs for three new offices.

And on identity and endpoint management with Microsoft 365, I manage Microsoft 365, Intune and Okta. At Rackspace, my biggest project as IT Engineer was enrolling 600 laptops in Intune and setting up single sign-on through Okta. I also cut new-hire laptop setup from a day to under an hour.

I would be glad to talk through how I could support your team in an interview.

Thank you for reading my application.

How IT cover letters get read

Do IT hiring managers read cover letters?

How often it gets read

Many IT applications go out without a cover letter, and plenty of IT postings don't ask for one. When the posting does ask, or the application has a field for it, the letter is usually read after your resume makes the shortlist, by the IT manager you would report to.

That reader wants to know one thing: will this person keep our systems running and our users happy? A letter that answers it with real numbers stands out, because few applications include one.

Writing for a non-technical reader

Sometimes the reader is an HR partner or a manager outside IT. Write so they can follow: say what a system does for the business before you say how you built it.

"Kept email and file access running for 600 people during an office move" reads well to anyone. "Migrated Exchange to Exchange Online in a hybrid configuration" only reads well to IT.

The method for IT cover letters

How to write a cover letter for an IT position

Behind the IT template are three steps, each adapted to IT work.

The same method for any job is in my how-to guide for cover letters.

01

Start with the systems you run and their size

Open your proof with scale: how many users, servers, sites or tickets you handle. It gives the reader a picture of the environment you come from.

Then add the platforms, using the posting's words: Windows Server, Active Directory, Microsoft 365, VMware, Cisco, or whatever it lists.

02

Explain the work for a non-technical reader

Choose the posting's three most important requirements and explain each in terms of what it does for the business: uptime, security, faster onboarding, fewer tickets.

Common IT requirements look like:

  • server and system administration on Windows or Linux
  • networking, VPN and firewalls
  • identity and device management: Active Directory, Microsoft 365, Intune, Okta
  • user support and ticket handling
03

Prove it with an outage, a migration or a ticket number

IT results come in a few clear shapes: an outage you fixed or prevented, a migration you delivered, or support numbers like resolution time and ticket volume.

Pick one per requirement, with a number. Certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+ or Security+, a Cisco CCNA or a Microsoft certification belong here too, next to the work they relate to.

IT cover letter checklist

What to include in an IT cover letter

Five things every IT cover letter needs before you apply.

Before you hit send

  • The size of your environmentUsers, devices, servers, sites or tickets per week.
  • The platforms the posting listsWindows Server, Microsoft 365, Cisco or VMware, as they appear in the ad.
  • One problem you solvedAn outage, a migration or a security fix.
  • A number for the businessUptime, setup time, resolution time or tickets closed.
  • Your certificationsCompTIA, Cisco or Microsoft, if the posting values them.

This list covers what’s specific to an IT cover letter. For the parts every cover letter needs, from the header to the sign-off, see what a cover letter template needs.

Help desk and IT support roles

IT support and help desk cover letters

For an IT support or help desk position, the letter puts more weight on the people you help.

Lead with volume and variety: how many users you support, how many tickets you close in a week, and the kinds of problems you handle, from password resets to laptop rebuilds.

Then show how you treat people. A sentence about calming down a stressed executive, writing a how-to that cut repeat tickets, or training new staff shows the reader you are good with users as well as with machines.

Mention the ticketing system you know, such as ServiceNow, Jira Service Management or Zendesk, and certifications like CompTIA A+. For a full template, see the IT support specialist cover letter.

Entry-level IT

Writing an IT cover letter with no experience

Entry-level IT hiring leans on proof you can build yourself. A home lab with a domain controller, a few virtual machines and a firewall gives you real things to write about.

Certifications help too: CompTIA A+ for support roles, Network+ or CCNA for networking, Security+ for security-leaning jobs. Write about what you set up while studying, as well as the certificate itself.

Any job where you supported people counts: retail, a campus help desk, helping a small business with its computers. Describe it with the same structure: what broke, how you fixed it, and what happened next.

Each IT role has its own sample letter and template. Here is what each one has to show.

IT cover letter mistakes

IT cover letter do's and don'ts

Fix these, and your letter will read like it came from someone who runs real systems.

IT cover letter don'ts

  • Don't list every acronym you know. A wall of technologies is harder to read than three platforms used on real projects.
  • Don't leave out scale. 'Managed servers' means little; '120 servers across three sites' tells the reader what you can handle.
  • Don't write only for IT readers. Explain each result in terms of what it did for the users or the business.
  • Don't open with 'I am a hard-working IT professional'. Start with the role and your strongest piece of proof.
  • Don't list certifications without context. Tie each one to work you did with it, or to what the job needs.
  • Don't let it run long. One page is plenty, and your resume bullet points can hold the details.

Frequently asked

IT Cover Letter Questions, Answered

Start with the role and your strongest fact, for example: "I am applying for your IT Engineer role, and I keep 120 servers and 600 users running at a retail company." My guide shows how to open a cover letter with your research.

Yes, when the posting mentions them or they match the job: A+ for support, Network+ or CCNA for networking, Security+ for security work. Put each one next to the work it relates to instead of in a list.

The number of users and tickets you handle, the kinds of problems you solve, the ticketing tools you use, and one example of helping a user under pressure. The IT support and help desk section above has the details.

Keep it to one page and around 250 to 350 words. IT managers are busy, so shorter is fine as long as each requirement gets its proof.

It can structure a draft, but it doesn't know your environment, your numbers or your certifications. Use it as a starting point at most, and rewrite each paragraph with your real work.
