Dear John Deere engineering team,
I would like to be considered for the Mechanical Design Engineer role I saw on your careers site. I work in mechanical design for heavy equipment, and I am looking for my next design challenge on a product I believe in.
Reading about John Deere, I was most interested in the electrification and autonomy work going into your newer tractors. Designing parts for machines that are changing that quickly is the work I want to do.
Three requirements in your posting stand out to me: 3D CAD design in SolidWorks, GD&T and tolerance analysis and prototype build and test. Here is how I have handled each one.
On 3D CAD design in SolidWorks, I spend most of my day in SolidWorks, sheet metal design and assembly drawings. As a Mechanical Design Engineer at Cummins, I was in charge of redesigning an engine mounting bracket that cut its weight by 18%. I also built the parametric models the team now reuses for new variants.
For GD&T and tolerance analysis, I work with GD&T per ASME Y14.5, tolerance stack-ups and first-article reviews. As a Mechanical Design Engineer at Cummins, I took on running the tolerance stack-ups that fixed a recurring fit problem on the assembly line.
And on prototype build and test, my tools are 3D printing, test rigs and FEA in ANSYS. At Cummins as a Mechanical Design Engineer, I handled taking a cooling-fan housing from first prototype to a production-ready design. I also ran the vibration tests that cleared it for production.
I would be glad to bring a few drawings and test results to an interview and walk you through them.
Thank you for your time.
Kind regards,
Ethan Kowalski
