Civil Engineer Cover Letter

A civil engineer cover letter built from real civil job ads

Here is a cover letter for civil engineer jobs that you can edit in a few minutes: a full sample, a free template, and advice built from what civil engineering job ads ask for.

My background is 13 years of recruiting experience, including many years at Google, and these days I help engineers with their resumes through my resume service for engineers. This page builds on what makes any engineering letter work and on what civil postings look for.

Civil work is public, permitted and measured, which makes it easy to prove. A road, a site plan or a stormwater system has a size, a budget and a client. Your letter should include all three.

Dear Kimley-Horn hiring team,

Please accept my application for the Civil Engineer position listed on Indeed. I work in site and land development, I hold my EIT, and I am preparing for the PE exam.

I have followed Kimley-Horn for a while, especially the land development and transportation work your Texas offices are known for, and I would like to contribute to projects like those.

Your posting highlights three areas: site design and grading in Civil 3D, stormwater design and permitting and plan production and coordination with contractors. Below is my experience in each.

For site design and grading in Civil 3D, I use AutoCAD Civil 3D, grading plans and utility layouts on every project. As a Civil Engineer (EIT) at Halff, I was responsible for designing grading and utility plans for a 120-acre residential development. I also balanced cut and fill so the project needed no imported fill.

On stormwater design and permitting, my work covers stormwater modeling, detention design and SWPPPs. Working as a Civil Engineer (EIT) at Halff, I handled preparing drainage reports and detention designs that the city approved on first submittal.

And for plan production and coordination with contractors, I rely on plan sets, RFI responses and site visits. At Halff, as a Civil Engineer (EIT), I took charge of producing plan sets for six projects and answering contractor RFIs during construction. I also walked the site weekly during construction to resolve field conflicts.

I would welcome an interview to talk about these projects and how I could support your team.

Thank you for taking the time to review my application.

Sincerely,

Daniel Brooks

How civil engineering cover letters get read

Do hiring managers read civil engineering cover letters?

Who reads it, and when

In most hiring processes, the resume gets screened first and the cover letter gets read later, by the hiring manager or the team you would join. At an engineering firm, that is often a project manager or a department lead who reviews your work closely.

That reader knows the work. A clear paragraph about a real project, with its size and the permits behind it, carries more weight with them than any summary of your strengths.

Are cover letters outdated?

No, though fewer people read them at the screening stage than candidates think. My guide covers whether you need a cover letter in full; for civil roles, send one whenever the posting asks for it or the job matters to you.

The method for civil engineer cover letters

How to write a cover letter for a civil engineer job

Three steps shape the civil template above. This is how they apply to civil projects.

For the version that applies to every job, read the full cover letter method in my guide.

01

Lead with your specialty and licence status

Civil engineering covers very different jobs: site development, transportation, water resources, structural, geotechnical. Say which one you work in, in your first paragraph, so the reader knows where you fit.

Then add your licence status. Use EIT, or EI in states that call it that, once you have cleared the FE exam, and PE only after your state board has licensed you. If you are preparing for the PE, say so: it shows where you are headed.

02

Mirror the posting's 3 requirements

Civil postings tend to repeat the same kinds of requirements. Choose the top three for this particular job and use the posting's wording.

Common ones include:

  • design in AutoCAD or Civil 3D
  • stormwater and drainage design and permitting
  • plan production and construction documents
  • coordination with clients, agencies and contractors
03

Prove each one with a project: scope, budget, permits

Give each requirement a paragraph built around one project. Civil projects come with numbers that are easy to check: acres, miles of roadway, lots, construction cost, or the number of review cycles.

If a design was approved on first submittal or a project came in under budget, say so. Those are results a civil hiring manager reads for.

Civil engineering cover letter checklist

What to include in a civil engineering cover letter

Five things every civil cover letter should have before it goes out.

Before you hit send

  • Your specialtySite, transportation, water, structural or geotechnical.
  • Your licence statusEIT or EI, PE, or your plans for the FE or PE exam.
  • The software the ad listsAutoCAD, Civil 3D or MicroStation, matching the ad's spelling.
  • A project and its numbersAcres, lane miles, lots or construction cost.
  • A permit or approval resultApproved on first submittal, or delivered under budget.

This list covers what’s specific to a civil engineer cover letter. For the parts every cover letter needs, from the header to the sign-off, see what a cover letter template needs.

New grads and EITs

Writing a civil engineering cover letter with no experience

As a new grad, your letter keeps the same parts. Your proof comes from a senior design project, a summer internship with a firm or a state DOT, a co-op term, or a student chapter project like concrete canoe or steel bridge.

Describe your senior design project like a real job: the client or the site, what you designed, the software you used, and what you delivered. A grading plan or a drainage design from school shows the same skills a firm hires for.

Put your FE status in the first paragraph. If you have cleared it, write EIT (or EI). If the exam is scheduled, give the date. Either way, the reader knows where you are on the path to a PE.

Civil engineer cover letter mistakes

Civil engineer cover letter mistakes to avoid

Most of these are easy to fix in a second draft.

Civil engineer cover letter don'ts

  • Don't stay vague about your specialty. 'Civil engineer with broad experience' tells a site development manager nothing.
  • Don't write PE after your name before your state board has licensed you. Use EIT or EI, or say when you plan to sit the exam.
  • Don't describe a project without its size. Acres, miles, lots or a budget turn a line into proof.
  • Don't list every software package you have opened. Stick to the ones in the job ad.
  • Don't send a generic letter to every firm. Change the line about the firm's projects each time.
  • Don't add a second page. Save the detailed project list for your resume bullet points.

Get a second pair of eyes before you hit send.

You have a recruiter-built cover letter. Now let me check your resume, the document that gets you past the first screen.

Frequently asked

Civil Engineer Cover Letter Questions, Answered

In the first paragraph. Civil job ads often list an EIT or a PE as a requirement or a plus, so make it easy to find, and never claim more than your state board has granted.

The software the job ad lists, spelled the same way. AutoCAD and Civil 3D come up most in site and land development ads, and MicroStation in many transportation roles.

One page, about 250 to 350 words. If you need more room, cut the project descriptions down to the numbers.

It can draft the structure, but it doesn't know your projects, your permits or your numbers, and those are what a civil hiring manager reads for. Use it for a first draft at most, then rewrite every paragraph with your own work.

Your specialty, your licence status, the software the ad lists, one project with its numbers, and an approval or budget result. My guide explains what goes in a cover letter for any job.

Yes. It costs nothing, needs no account and adds no watermark. Edit the panel, then download your PDF.
