Software Engineer Cover Letter

A software engineer cover letter from a former Google recruiter

Most software engineer cover letters I read as a recruiter fell into two groups: a short note that told me something the resume couldn't, or a long page of adjectives. Below, I'll help you write the first kind, with a free template, a full example and samples for every level.

I recruited for 13 years, including many years at Google, hiring for engineering teams. Today I help engineers rewrite their resumes through TechieCV, my resume writing service.

Engineers are skeptical of cover letters, and they have a point: few get read closely. Below I explain who reads yours and when, how long it should be, how to send it, and what to write at each stage of your career.

If your resume needs work first, start with a free resume review. I read every one myself.

Hello Shopify engineering team,

I'm applying for the Software Engineer opening on your careers site. I have spent the last few years in backend and product engineering, and I would like to do that work at Shopify.

What drew me in was the posts your engineers have written about scaling checkout for flash sales. Problems at that scale are the ones I enjoy most.

From the posting, three things matter most for this role: writing well-tested production code, designing services and APIs and owning features from design to launch. Here is where I stand on each.

For writing well-tested production code, I work daily with Java, JUnit and code review. As a Software Engineer at Intuit, my main project was raising test coverage on the payments service from 40% to 85%. I also set up the integration tests that now run on every merge.

On designing services and APIs, I use Spring Boot, REST and gRPC and PostgreSQL. In my role as Software Engineer at Intuit, I was responsible for designing the invoicing API that four product teams now call.

And for owning features from design to launch, I rely on design docs, feature flags and on-call. At Intuit, the work I'm proudest of as a Software Engineer was taking a tax-estimate feature from design doc to launch for 2M users. I also fixed a production incident during launch week within the hour.

I'd welcome the chance to go through this work with your team in an interview.

Thanks for reading.

Best regards,

Priya Raman

A recruiter's take on software engineering cover letters

Do recruiters read cover letters for software engineer jobs?

Who reads it: a recruiter or an engineer

It depends on the size of the company. At a big tech company, the first reader is a recruiter working through a long queue, and the resume decides that first cut. At a startup, the person reading your application is often an engineer or a founder, and a short, specific letter gets read.

Either way, the letter is read after the resume. So get your resume ready for the recruiter screen first.

When it gets read

When I was recruiting, I rarely opened cover letters at the screening stage. They came up later: when a hiring manager wanted more context before a final round, or when two finalists were close.

That is the moment your letter can help. A hiring manager who reads, in your own words, why you want this team has one more reason to pick you.

When it's worth writing one

Write one when the application asks for it, when you apply to a startup or a small team, when you are changing careers, or when a referral or a specific project ties you to the company. Once you have a base like the template above, each new letter is mostly a matter of changing three paragraphs.

For the general answer on whether cover letters still matter, read do you need a cover letter, a recruiter's take in my guide.

How I'd write it

How to write a software engineer cover letter

Three steps went into the template above, and each one has a software-specific twist.

My step-by-step cover letter guide covers the method for any job. Below is the software engineering version.

There are three steps:

01

Research the product and the team

Read the engineering blog, the changelog or a recent launch post, and pick one technical detail you find interesting. Put it in your second paragraph, in one sentence.

Engineers notice when someone has looked at what they actually built. It is the fastest way to show you would be a colleague who cares about the product.

02

Mirror the posting's 3 requirements

Software postings list a lot of technologies. Skip the long tail and pick the three requirements that describe the work: usually a language or stack, a kind of system, and a way of working.

For a software engineer, they tend to look like:

  • production code in a named language, with tests
  • system design for services, APIs or data
  • ownership of features from design doc to launch
  • collaboration through code review and on-call

Use the posting's own words for each. If it says distributed systems, write distributed systems.

03

Prove each one with a project or a number

One paragraph per requirement: the tools, the project, and what changed because of your work. Latency, error rates, test coverage, users or revenue all work as numbers.

If a project is public, link it: a GitHub repo, a design write-up or the live product. A link the reader can open is stronger proof than any adjective.

This is the full letter from the generator, as you would send it. The numbered notes explain each part, and the three middle paragraphs answer code quality, system design and ownership.

It fits on one screen. Yours should too.

Samples for every career stage

Software engineer cover letter samples by level

The structure stays the same at every level. What changes is the proof. Here is an opening and a proof paragraph for each stage, so you can see the difference.

New grad software engineer

Opening: I'm applying for the Software Engineer, New Grad role on your careers page. I graduate in May with a BS in computer science, and I spent last summer as an intern on the payments team at Square.

Proof: On testing and code quality, my internship project was a reconciliation job in Kotlin that now runs nightly. I wrote it with full unit test coverage, and my team kept the test setup for later projects.

Mid-level software engineer

Opening: I'm applying for the Software Engineer II role you posted on LinkedIn. For the past four years I have built backend services in Go at a logistics company, most recently on route planning.

Proof: On designing services, I split our route-planning monolith into three services with clear APIs. Deploys went from weekly to daily, and on-call pages for that area dropped by half.

Senior software engineer

Opening: I'm applying for the Senior Software Engineer role on your platform team. I have led backend work for eight years, the last three as tech lead for a team of six at a fintech company.

Proof: On technical leadership, I wrote the design doc for our move to event-driven billing and led its rollout across four teams. It shipped with no billing errors in its first quarter, and two engineers I mentored now lead parts of it.

Length, layout and how to send it

Software engineer cover letter format

Length and layout

Keep it to about 250 to 350 words: three or four short paragraphs that fit on one screen. Use the same font and header as your resume, and save it as a PDF named with your name and the role.

Margins, fonts and spacing follow the same rules for every job. You will find them in the professional cover letter format section of my cover letter samples page.

Header: GitHub, portfolio and LinkedIn

Put your name, email and phone at the top, then the links that prove your work: GitHub if it has real projects, a portfolio or personal site, and LinkedIn.

Only link a GitHub profile you would be happy for an engineer to open. A few pinned repositories with clear READMEs do more for you than years of empty commit history.

Paste it, upload it or put it in the email?

If the application has a cover letter upload field, upload the PDF. When there is only a free-text field, copy in the plain text of the letter without the header, since the form already holds your details.

If you are emailing an engineer or a founder directly, the email is the letter. Write only a few lines, mention the job title in your subject, and attach your resume.

Software engineer cover letter checklist

What to include in a software engineer cover letter

Run through these five points before you apply.

Before you hit send

  • Your main language and stackWritten the way the posting writes them: Go, React, AWS.
  • One system you built or changedWhat it does, and how many users or requests it serves.
  • A number from your engineering workLatency, uptime, test coverage, deploy frequency or cost.
  • A link the reader can openGitHub, a design write-up or the live product.
  • How you work with other engineersCode reviews, design docs, mentoring or on-call.

This list covers what’s specific to a software engineer cover letter. For the parts every cover letter needs, from the header to the sign-off, see what a cover letter template needs.

New grads, bootcamp grads and career changers

Writing a software engineer cover letter with no experience

With no job title to point to, your projects carry the letter. Pick two or three that use the stack in the posting, and describe each one like a job: the problem, what you built, and what happened.

Good sources: internships, a capstone or class project, open-source contributions, a hackathon build, or an app people actually use. Link each one. Engineers will click a working demo before they read a list of courses.

If you are switching careers, use your old field. A former analyst who automated reports in Python, or a teacher who built a grading tool, has proof of the thing employers worry about most: that you can ship code that solves a real problem.

Software engineer cover letter mistakes

Software engineer cover letter do's and don'ts

These come up every week in the letters engineers send me along with their resumes.

Software engineer cover letter don'ts

  • Don't list every language you have touched. Stick to the stack the posting asks for.
  • Don't repeat your resume in paragraph form. Use the letter for what the resume can't show: why this team, and the story behind one project.
  • Don't open with 'I am passionate about technology' or 'I am a fast learner'. Every reader has seen those lines, and they say nothing about your work.
  • Don't gush about the company. One specific detail shows more interest than a paragraph of praise.
  • Don't paste code or deep implementation detail. That level of detail is for your resume bullet points and the technical interview.
  • Don't let it run past one page. A software engineer cover letter should fit on one screen.

Frequently asked

Software Engineer Cover Letter Questions, Answered

Yes. Motivation letter is the name used in much of Europe, and it covers the same ground: why this company, why this role, and proof that you can do the work. If the move involves relocating, add a line on that.

Only in focus. Use the title the posting uses and match what it stresses: developer postings often lean toward building features in a given stack, engineer postings toward systems, scale and design. The template works for both once you change the role and the three requirements.

If the role really interests you, yes. With a template ready, writing a short, specific letter is quick, and it is the one place you can explain why you want this team.

It can give you a first draft, but your projects, your numbers and your reason for wanting this company have to come from you. Engineers spot a generic AI letter quickly, so rewrite every line you keep.

Aim for 250 to 350 words so it fits on one screen. If yours runs longer, trim each proof paragraph to the stack, the project and the number.

Yes, completely. There is no sign-up, and the PDF carries no watermark. Fill in your details on the left and download it when it reads right.
