shows back up inside the bullet that proves you actually owned the team, the budget, or the audit on top of

scan top to bottom, and several parsers (Workday and Greenhouse most reliably) capture QA Manager
keywords more cleanly when they live in a clearly labeled block in the top third of the file.

Use a grouped, row-by-row layout. Never a comma wall. Aim for 7 to 9 row
labels (Quality Strategy, Leadership & People, Test Management Platforms, Automation Governance,
Metrics & KPIs, Vendor & Budget, Compliance, Reporting). Each row reads as one line of 4 to 8
names.

Once a bullet carries a metric, name the team, the program, and the
platform that produced it. The version that survives both the 90-second director scan and the parser
reads like this:

Quality checks
Match the JD's spelling on every program. “TestRail” not “Test Rail”;
“Xray for Jira” not “X-Ray”; “BrowserStack” not
“Browser-Stack.”
Drop proficiency adjectives (“Expert TestRail”, “Advanced ISTQB”). No
reviewer will verify them; they only shrink the line.
Order rows by the function they describe, never alphabetically. Hiring directors read the row
headers first and then drop into the tool names.
Anything in your skills row should also surface in a bullet as ownership (team, budget, program, or
audit). Skills row makes the claim; the bullet is the receipt.

Reading like a QA Engineer or SDET who got promoted
Bullets that lead with regression suites, Playwright scripts, and bug-triage scope
(with “managed team” tacked on at the end) miss the leadership signal a hiring director scans
for first.
Fix: Lead each role with team size, team composition, hiring
loops, calibration cadence, and the program you owned. Push any residual IC bullets to the bottom of the
job block or delete them.
Listing a program with no team or budget behind it
“Authored test strategy” and “owned release readiness”
without a team size or a service scope reads as a one-pager exercise, not a function you ran.
Fix: Pair every program with the team that delivered it and the
surface or service count it covered. “Authored the test strategy for 5 product squads (12 ICs) on
payments” lands; bare “authored test strategy” does not.
Round KPI claims with no baseline or window
“Cut defect leakage 50%” with no starting figure, no surface, and no
time window is filler. Hiring directors know quality KPI numbers are the most-padded metric on a QA
Manager file.
Fix: Pair the after-number with the before-number, the product
line it ran on, and the quarter-count it covered. “Defect leakage from 6.4% to 1.9% over 4
quarters” reads as credible; “reduced defect leakage 70%” does not.
A coding-heavy skills block that buries the leadership row
Stuffing Java, Python, Playwright, Selenium, Cypress, REST Assured, and pytest as
row one signals you have not made the IC-to-manager switch. The director-track reviewer reads it as
indecision about which job you want.
Fix: Lead with Quality Strategy and Leadership rows. Push
automation tools into a single review-level row labeled “Automation Governance”, name two or
three at most, and let the SDETs you manage own the framework signal.
No budget figure on any leadership bullet
QA-tooling budget, vendor savings, training-budget allocation, and audit-pass
counts are the dollar evidence a hiring director scans for. Skipping all of them softens the function-owner
claim.
Fix: Put at least one dollar-anchored line on each role: annual
QA-tooling budget owned, vendor-contract savings, or the training allocation you signed. “Owned the
$180k QA-tooling budget” is the kind of line that gets you a callback.
Compliance acronyms with no audit-pass outcome
Listing SOC2, FDA, or WCAG in the skills row without a bullet that names the
audit-pass result is a hollow claim. Auditors and hiring directors both want the outcome.
Fix: Pair each compliance acronym with the artifact you shipped
and the audit result. “Authored CC7.x evidence package supporting clean SOC2 Type 2 audit”
reads as ownership; bare “SOC2” in a skills row does not.

Read the JD, highlight every program, platform, governance practice, and compliance acronym the
company calls out, and count anything that lands more than once. Hold that list against your skills
rows and your bullets. Where a recurring program shows up in the JD but is missing from your file,
place it (only if you actually ran it) in the row that fits and inside the bullet that already
evidences the work. Then pass the draft through an ATS
Checker to confirm the parser still pulls the structured fields cleanly.
A QA Manager resume reads as ownership of the quality function: team-size managed, hiring loops
chaired, vendor-tool budgets owned, quality KPIs reported to the exec board, regulatory artifacts
produced. A QA Engineer file reads as IC quality work (test plans, regression scope, exploratory
charters); an SDET file reads as IC engineering output (framework authorship, CI sharding, page-object
patterns). The QA Manager bullets do not author Playwright suites or write Selenium tests; they
delegate that work to SDETs and review the quality of what ships. If your bullets describe the people,
programs, budgets, and reporting cadence you owned, you are a QA Manager. If they describe the harness
or the test campaigns themselves, you are an IC and the file should be pitched that way.
Carry enough technical depth to review an SDET's pull request, weigh a Selenium-vs-Playwright
recommendation, and call a flaky-test root cause in a triage session. You do not need to ship framework
code. The resume signal is: one or two languages listed at maintenance depth, one or two automation
tools listed as governance-level familiar, and zero bullets that try to claim authorship of test
scripts. Hiring directors filter out QA Manager files that pad the skills block with IC-level coding
rows, since it suggests you have not made the switch to running a function.
Lead each role's bullets with team size, team composition, hiring-loop count, internal promotions you
sponsored, attrition you kept under a target, and the calibration cadence you ran. Then bolt the
program outcome (escape rate, defect leakage, automation coverage, audit-pass result) onto the
trailing bullets. The order matters: hiring directors scan the first two bullets of a job for
management evidence. Lead with the team and the cadence, follow with the program, finish with the
budget or the vendor decision. A bullet that names 7 IC reports, weekly 1:1s, 4 internal promotions,
and 8 percent attrition lands as managerial; a bullet that names a regression-suite cut without
