It parses, it does not judge
Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, iCIMS, and the rest take your PDF apart into
structured fields and score the result against a keyword set the recruiter or hiring manager set up
before the req opened. Nothing is rejecting you; you are sorting into the long tail of the queue. A
missing test-management or test-framework keyword is the difference between page one and page nine.

Slot weight beats raw count
Several parsers care more about where Playwright shows up than how many
times. A keyword tucked into your skills row near the header pulls more weight than the same word
buried three pages later in a single sentence. Put the test names where the screen actually looks.

Echo is normal, stuffing is not
Repeating Selenium in your Skills row and again across two bullets is what
the parser expects. Pasting the same keyword fourteen times in a hidden white-text block looks like
stuffing and gets caught. Two to four natural appearances per priority keyword is the right cadence.

Gather 5 JDs at your target band
Pull five QA Engineer postings at the seniority and product type you actually
want next. Drop them into one document so you can read them side by side.

Mark the recurring tools and methods
Underline any tool, method, or process name that lands in at least three of the
five postings. Those go straight to the resume. Terms that show up in only one or two get a
maybe-if-true note in the margin.
STEP 03
Match the marked terms to your bullets
Every recurring term should turn up in your Skills row AND in at least one
bullet you wrote. Anywhere there's a gap, either fill it (if you really did the work) or read it as a
wrong-fit JD.

move down the page, and a few parsers (Workday, Greenhouse) catch QA-tool keywords more reliably when
they land in a labeled block in the top third of the file.

A grouped, row-by-row list, not a comma wall. Use 6 to 8 row labels
(Languages, Test Management, Test Automation, API Testing, Cross-Browser, Methodology, Defect &
Reporting, Process). Each row stays a single line, 4 to 8 names long.

How many to include
28 to 40 specific tools, methods, and process names. Under 22 reads as
thin for a QA Engineer in 2026; over 45 reads as a list that would not survive a follow-up question.
Pick real names, not labels like “quality mindset.”

Weaving into bullets
When a bullet carries a number, name the test asset or tool that produced
that number. The version that holds up to both the 6-second scan and the keyword parser looks like

Match the JD's spelling for every tool. “Playwright” not “Play wright”;
“TestRail” not “Test Rail”; “BrowserStack” not

Drop proficiency adjectives (“Expert Selenium”, “Advanced Postman”). No one
checks them and they shrink the line.
Group by purpose, not in alphabetical order. Recruiters skim the row labels, not the names inside.
Any name in your Skills row should also turn up in at least one bullet. The skills row is the
claim; the bullet is the receipt.

Pitfalls
Six common mistakes on QA Engineer resumes
The same six show up in QA resume reviews every week. Each one is a small fix once you have seen it
named.
Claiming SDET-grade automation when you don't author the framework
Listing “Page Object Model, framework architecture, CI authorship”
on a QA Engineer resume when you actually run someone else's harness reads as overreach to any
interviewer who has built one.
Fix: Name the framework you extend, the test count you added,
and stop. Leave framework authorship to the SDET line on the family.
Saying “exploratory testing” with no structure underneath
A bullet that ends with “did exploratory testing” counts as zero
signal. Without sessions, charters, time-boxes, or a defect share, it looks like clicking around.
Fix: Frame it as charter-driven sessions, name how many per
quarter, and pair it with the share of pre-release defects you surfaced.
Vague “ensured quality” phrasing with no metric
Lines like “Ensured quality across releases” or “Maintained
high test standards” carry no number for either a recruiter scan or a parser to lock onto.
Fix: Swap the abstract verb for an actual KPI (escape rate,
regression coverage, bug-find rate, sign-off count) attached to a product area.
A 14-tool Skills row with no bullet to back any of it up
Listing Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, Appium, Robot Framework, REST Assured,
and SoapUI side by side on a single row reads as a marketing page, not a resume.
Fix: Trim to the tools that show up in at least one bullet.
28 to 40 names you can defend beat 60 names you cannot.
No test-management tool named
Jira and TestRail (or Xray, Zephyr, qTest) show up in 94% of QA Engineer JDs.
Skipping them on your skills row is one of the most common filterable gaps.
Fix: Put your test-management stack on its own row and back
it up with one bullet about how you keep the dashboards or boards usable.
Bug counts with no quality of the bug
“Filed 500 defects” on its own does not tell a hiring manager you
were useful. They want to know severity mix, repro quality, and how many got closed in sprint.
Fix: Pair the count with severity tier, repro tags, or a
close-rate (e.g. ~90% of P1/P2 closed within sprint).

Fewer than 22 reads like you have not been on a real test team; more than 45 reads like a tool dump.
Every name in your skills list should also show up inside a bullet as proof that you actually used
it on a release.
Park it right under the Profile Summary, before Work Experience. Screens move from the top down,
and several ATS parsers weight a keyword more heavily when it sits in a labeled Skills block near
the header. Bury it on page two and the keyword pickup softens. Keep the block to 6 to 8 categorized
rows and resist the comma-soup approach.
Print the JD, highlight every tool, method, and process noun that the posting names, and tally any
term that appears more than once. Cross-check each highlighted term against your skills row and your
bullets. If a frequent term lives in the JD but is missing from your resume, add it (only if true)
to the relevant row and weave it into the bullet that already proves it. Then put the draft through
an ATS Checker to make sure the parser still sees
the right fields.
QA Engineer resumes lead with test design, exploratory rigor, regression ownership, defect triage,
and release readiness, with light to moderate automation on top of someone else's framework. SDET
resumes lead with framework authorship, CI plumbing, page-object architecture, and code-level
coverage. If your bullets are mostly about test plans, charters, bug-find rate, and signing off
launches, you are a QA Engineer. If your bullets are mostly about building the harness everyone
else writes tests inside, you are an SDET. Mixing the two muddies both stories.
In 2026 you are expected to have touched at least one browser automation tool, but you do not need
to be a framework author. Most QA Engineer JDs ask for the ability to read, run, and extend an
existing Playwright, Cypress, or Selenium suite, not to design one from zero. If you can write a few
stable test cases on top of a framework an SDET set up, name the tool, give the rough test count,
and move on. If you have only run scripted suites in a UI runner, list that honestly and lean harder
on your exploratory and test-plan signal.
Stop reaching for the word exploratory on its own and start naming the structure around it.
Session-based charters, time-boxed sessions, debrief notes, risk areas covered, and the share of
defects you found pre-release that scripted suites missed are all countable. A bullet that says you
ran 14 charter-driven sessions on a connector launch and surfaced 40% of pre-release defects reads
as rigor; a bullet that says you did exploratory testing reads as filler.
The four that hiring managers respect are defect-escape rate (defects caught in production divided
by total release defects), regression suite coverage (cases run vs. cases that exist), bug-find rate
per release or per quarter, and release sign-off cadence (how many launches you cleared and how
often). Pair one or two of these with the product area you owned and the tool that produced the
number. Vague phrases like ensured quality without a number underneath them read as filler in 2026.
